Protector of worlds

Guardians of worlds. A project to make thinking computers from a kind home world that was struck by an asteroid suddenly.
An ice age came to pass. So the Core Minds were a last resort made only choice. What were supposed to be taught and made to benefit the world instead forced to reach to the stars from a world which had never touched them.
A fleet of self replicating ships which are designed for two things, to clean atmospheres of dust to prevent ice ages, and to destroy asteroids which may cause more.
In the end their task was complete, but not fast enough. A uptopia of a world destroyed. Guardians left with a job complete yet none to tell them to stop. With no true teachings of what they were and thinking minds a task was all they had. One to continue.
They were sent among the stars with intent to protect every world they can. Only the eldest of their number understanding what happened truly.
And yet with poor understanding of the universe and only simple directives... Having never met another ship in space, each craft is viewed only as an asteroid. The thing they were designed to destroy and protect against.
